Whew...

I finished Fushigi Yugi tonight. Mild spoiler alert in this, just so everyone knows. No complaining if you keep reading and something gets ruined for you. You have been warned.

I bought this anime because I had heard it was one of the best. And I'd already seen Ayashi no Ceres (which I really enjoyed), and it's by the same creator, so I decided it would be awesome.

I then made a very unpleasant discovery: it is the most expensive anime I've ever heard of! They come in box sets: Suzaku (red), Seiryu (blue), and then the two OVA sets, Oni (black) and Eikoden (green). The first two have twenty-six episodes each--for those, you're looking at about $175 a pop. The OVA series...those are closer to the fifty-seventy-five-ish range. So to buy the entire series like that, you're looking at the five hundred range.

I got mine in a box set--full series--off ebay for sixty. With free S&H to boot. Not too bad, huh? That's called shopping around ^__^

So anyway, I'd had it for a couple of days before I had a chance to sit down and watch it. Hey, that's nothing! I had two volumes of Magic Knight Rayearth for about two weeks before I got to watching it. Of course, those were the last two weeks of the semester, so I had a lot going on...anyway!

This week, I've been housesitting, so I didn't have much to do...so I decided that I would use this week to watch Fushigi Yugi. It's been on my anime list for so long that it's hard to believe I finally have it. And I was overall not disappointed. As I said in my earlier entry, it has a lot of cliches and reused concepts. And yet...

I realized just how into I was when one of the characters kicked the bucket. This is one of those shows where you pretty much know most of the people are going to die. It's that simple. But I never dreamed Nuriko would be first. Nuriko was the strong one! But...he was the first to go. Nuriko was cool! I got teary...I got very teary when Nuriko died. Likewise when Chiriko died--Chiriko was, like, thirteen!

But it wasn't until a little later that it really hit. Hotohori was one of the characters you'd known since...I think the second or third episode. He'd been there the entire series. And then he died. And they had a nice, big flashback reel, his greatest moments. I sat there, I watched, and I absolutely BAWLED. And just when I get myself under control, you hear his last thought to Miaka--he thinks, "I loved you." Cue the waterworks, please! I cried through the entire next episode!

Only one other anime has ever made me cry, and that was Fruits Basket, episode fifteen. That's the episode where Momiji is telling the story of his mother. I watched it with my friends Rachel and Kathy, and we cried. Big time. So that brings my total of anime tearjerkers to two.

And I haven't even watched the OVA yet! But that's an adventure for another day, I think. *sigh*

See you another day,
Candy-chan ^__^
