"Are you sure you're all right?"
Nadeshiko sighed, albeit a good-natured sigh, and gave her husband a tired smile. "How many more times are you going to ask me? I think you're going for a record."
"You know I'm worried," Fujitaka admitted, a rare frown crossing his face. "Your health..."
"I know," she reached out and touched his face gently. It was true--while the pregnancy itself was going smoothly, she had been so tired lately. Her energy was waning, and she felt strange, something that she just couldn't write off as being related to the child she carried. "But I promise you--the baby will be fine."
"It's not just the baby I'm so concerned about..." he said softly. "You seem to be the least concerned about all this."
"Because I am," she said, reflecting a wisdom that belied her youth. "I know, anata. The baby will be born, safe and healthy. There is nothing to fear for her."
Fujitaka blinked. "Her?"
"Yes. Her," Nadeshiko nodded, smiling. "I think it will be a girl." She leaned back against the pillows; she had spent so much time here as of late, propped up in bed as she waited for the blessed day to come. Sometimes she just didn't have the energy to do much more than that, and Fujitaka usually saw through it when she tried to pretend she was fine. "And I...I know I will be there to see her."
It was an enigmatic statement, to say the least. She was intentionally being vague. Her deepest instincts were speaking now, the ones that always seemed to know things before they came to pass. She would see her second child, a beautiful baby girl. But she would not see her daughter past the first few years of her life. There was something, a dark shadow that crept over her future as it began to well inside her. It did not touch the child she carried, nor did it touch Fujitaka or Touya.
She would leave them behind far sooner than she wished.
Still, looking at Fujitaka and knowing his concern, Nadeshiko couldn't bring herself to tell him what she knew. Not yet. She didn't want to see his face as he reacted to that news any sooner than she had to. It would come in due time. But in the meantime... "I like the name Sakura," she said softly.
He didn't say anything in response to that, but simply smiled and put one hand gently to her swollen belly. It was a silent acknowledgment, an agreement to what was not quite a request.
There was a crash out in the stairwell. "Mama!" Touya came skittering into the room, nearly colliding with the door as he sprinted to her bedside, a small cluster of flowers clutched possessively in his fist. He held them out to her eagerly. "These are for you!"
Nadeshiko felt her smile grow wider. "Thank you..." she reached down to take the offered gift, brushing her fingers through her son's hair as she did so.
Touya...
Fujitaka...
...Sakura...
She would be taken from them far too soon. But somehow, she didn't think she would ever truly be able to leave them. She would enjoy the time she had left with them like this, and worry about it when the day came.
It was all she could do.
PS. I did a little research to refresh myself--I'd forgotten that there were signs/rumors that Nadeshiko had some sort of latent magical powers of her own. So I took that and ran with it. But man, I did love this series once upon a time...

She could see spirits. Touya got that ability from her. But I'll buy the idea that she had a touch of presetiment. There's nothing to say she didn't. ^_^

Or maybe it was just one of those things that popped up in really dire times? *scratches head* I dunno... *should still be asleep right now*
