Slowly, but surely, I've been watching the anime Fushigi Yugi. *all potential readers roll their eyes and leave* There's a lot of aspects to it that remind me of other shows I've watched.

Something comes up about strong will comes in (there's Magic Knight Rayearth, in which the entire world of Cephiro is controlled by a person's strong will), the pure-hearted, annoyingly cheerful heroine Miaka always needs to be saved by one of her friends (can we say Sailor Moon--Tuxedo Kamen saves her pretty much every episode); a normal girl discovering she's supposed to save another world (MKR again!), normal girl getting thrown into position of power (Ayashi no Ceres, which is by the same creator, so similarities can be forgiven); normal girl discovers at the same time that there really is magic (Cardcaptor Sakura).

The normal girl then has to find all the members of a special team selected by the stars, said heroes each having their own special power (I'd say Sailor Moon--again). This leads to a journey (half the animes ever made--MKR comes to mind); at the end of the journey, she will join with a higher being to save everybody (MKR--the mashin rule, yo!). Also, she finds love along the way (most animes) Meanwhile, a friend becomes an enemy becomes a friend (Sailor Moon or Ceres, except in Ceres it was her brother -_-), said friend only being evil because she/he is under the influence of the true enemy (Alcyone from MKR, Endymion from SM)...you getting the idea?

Oh, and did I mention the bishounen? I swear on the Toaster, half those guys are incredibly effeminate--and Nuriko's a homosexual cross-dresser, no less. But Chichiro rocks! Plus, he's voiced by Seki, and Seki does a ton of awesome characters, yo!

It's an odd mishmash of cliches and oft-used concepts...but it's still interesting! I'm still watching, wondering where this will lead, where's it gonna go? I must say I'm actually enjoying it. We'll see. I'm not even halfway through the series, but I've managed to come up with all of the above parallels...and yet it still intrigues me...I'm starting to question my sanity.
