Tra la laaaaaaaaaaa ^_^
Mar. 26th, 2005 07:45 pmIt's been a musical spring break for me. Let's start at the beginning.
Friday afternoon, it snowed. We're talking near-zero visibility, can't see the lines on the roads, enough to be slippery--not fun. One of my girls actually messaged me with this message: "I'm staying on campus tonight. I hope that's okay. I tried to leave, but it didn't work." I had little heart attacks, 'cause I reeeeeeeeally wanted to get home. Fortunately, it let up while we were doing room-checks. Room-checks took all of half an hour because so many people stayed on campus an extra night because of the weather. Grabbed my stuff, and headed home. Once I got on the highway, it was smooth sailing, but getting there took a little longer. It took about twenty minutes longer than usual for me to get home, but I made it!
Saturday was the Swingle Singers concert. They're a Europe-based group (I think they're based in Paris...), and one of their trademark things is doing instrumental pieces on an eight-part vocal line (try their rendition of the 1812 Overture--you will NOT be disappointed). My friends and I were up in the balcony--there's a benefactor who buys out the balcony for this kind of thing and donates the seats to students, so we got to go free!
Well, we're all music nerds, so we got reeeeeeeeeally into it. By the time they started busting out into Beatles and Duke Ellington hits, we were hootin' and hollerin'. When we went down afterwards to get their autographs, one of the guys promptly introduces us as 'the people from the balcony.' I seriously thought they were going to think we were just the most obnoxious people (we weren't trying to, but we were having fun ^_^). Instead, they were thanking us for being so enthusiastic! I guess a lot of their audience tends to be older, so it's really cool for them to see younger people getting into their style of music. Plus, it's always fun when people cheer for you :)
Well, Wednesday, Jewelsy comes down. God bless this girl...she had an extra ticket for Josh Groban, and lucky, lucky me got to go to the concert!!! The concert wasn't until Thursday, but she came down Wednesday, and we just hung out and relaxed. The thing started at eight--we started jumping off walls at about six, heehee.
The concert was phenomenal. A great jazz trumpeter opened for him, and then the man himself, Josh Groban! Between the lighting (he has THE most AMAZING tech crew, I swear), the music (behold, I am a music nerd, but I was actually sparing a little attention to study his vowel formation ~.~), and his comments (the man is fuggin' hilarious), it was an extremely entertaining, extremely attractive package. I don't know what was more fun--listening to him talk, or listening to him sing. Especially when there are people crowding up to the stage to give him presents and T-shirts, or cat-calling from the audience.
He came back for two encores, and on the second one, he sang one of my personal favorites, "Never Let Go." The crowd (it was a packed house) was stomping and cheering, hootin' and hollerin'. It was a great night--I liked one particular comment made there. It's amazing how just many people packed into a sports arena (that's where it was held) to listen to classical music. Incredible.
And today, Rachie-chan and Kat-chan came over and we watched movies (translation: Anime-Fest) for a few hours. It's great to hang out with them. Kat and I are both college kids now, and Rach graduates in May, so we don't get to hang out as much as we used to. But when we get together, it's just like old times. It was a great afternoon.
So now it's back to being semi-productive. Homework--while I listen to Josh Groban. Oceano is an awesome song, indeed it is. I think I'll call Kat later on, I found out something that I think she'll think is interesting. Otherwise, it's Music Theory and Educational Structure and Philosophy for me. Yay fun for spring break!
