It has been brought to my attention...
Jul. 19th, 2007 02:13 amSo my sister and I were just discussing the Harry Potter books. And I made the comment that I was still waiting for Mom to give me back the first one so I could get started on rereading them--Mom took them all first, and I told her to pass them off to me when she finished them so I could reread them as well.
Little Sister's response? "Oh, she loaned that to Ashley."
Me: ...Ashley?
Sis: Our cousin?
Me: ...she loaned my book to Ashley?
Sis: Mom couldn't find her copy of the first book, so she lent Ashley yours. I'm sure if you ask her, she'll let you have her copy.
Me: ...Mom doesn't have a copy of her own. My copy is THE copy.
Sis: ...oh.
So in spite of the fact that I have been pleading with Mom to give me back MY books when she's done with them (and as selfish as it sounds, books 1, 2, 3, and 5 for sure are mine, as I paid for them) so I can get rereading...she has instead decided to lend out MY stuff to other people.
Without asking.
Or even telling me.
...am I the only one seeing something wrong with this picture?? Maybe it's just because it's two-thirty in the morning and I'm tired and already cranky because I've been waiting for a week to see this Ghost Hunters episode, only to have a storm come in and scramble our satellite signal ten minutes into the episode so I got to see NOTHING...but I'm really pissed off.
If I loaned out something of Mom's without asking/informing her, she'd be furious. But watch--if I seem the least bit upset, she's going to get angry with me for being a brat and, "It's just a BOOK." I guarantee it. But goddammit, it's the principle of the thing! To say nothing of the fact that I've been begging to have them back so I can reread them before we get our hands on a copy of book seven.
Best part is that Sis swears up and down that I had it, and they lifted up something in my room to find it. So now we're digging through my stuff to loan it out to other people? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE??
So now I have to wait to read my own books.
Because apparently it's okay to take other people's things and give them out.
God, I can't wait to move...

Date: 2007-07-19 01:11 pm (UTC)You have a perfect right to be upset, and I don't think it's selfish at all. They're your books; you're the only one who has the right to decide what happens to them! That's just disgusting.

Date: 2007-07-19 04:04 pm (UTC)But, no, you're not being selfish. It's your book, your mother should have asked you if it was okay to lend something of yours to somebody else. If you do decide to say something and your mother tells you you're being a brat, stick to your guns. You can insist that it's just plain rude for ANYONE to lend out something that belongs to someone else without asking the owner first (if you speak in general terms rather than using the accusatory 'it was rude of YOU' maybe she'll be less apt to get defensive). And maybe use an example of one of her valued possessions and ask her how she would feel if you loaned it out without asking. :)
Anyway, you'll be out of there soon...

Date: 2007-07-19 07:00 pm (UTC)I vote when you get the 7th book, since I assume you'll be paying for it, read it then lend it out before anyone else can and keep doing so untill you get your books back. I think that works, if anyone complains you can go "I payed for it, and I lent it to my friend because they asked first" simple as.
Cruel but it's your stuff. Go to who she lent them to and go "I want my book back, now" You come off a bitch but hell, it's your right as it was effectively -stolen- from you. And mention to your mome that she wouldn't do that with something borrowed from a library or video shop >>

Date: 2007-07-19 10:02 pm (UTC)And my friend Norman did that last summer. Lent out my copy of the entire Hitchhiker's Guide and when I saw it again, pages were falling out! I've sworn up and down to have him give me the nicely-bound copy of it as a form of apology. YES! THE MOST EXPENSIVES VERSION I CAN FIND, HE WILL GET IT FOR ME TO REPAY ME FOR IT.
... I'm not an ogre when it comes to my books. No, not at all~ Kill people who mark in my books, dog-ear my books, bend the cover of my paperbacks, break their spines... *muttermutter*
But yeah. Totally agree with you. Fucking assholes.
