[livejournal.com profile] memlu posted this in her LJ, and I had to share it:

Researchers Knock Out HIV

With the latest advances in treatment, doctors have discovered that they can successfully neutralise the HIV virus. The so-called ‘combination therapy’ prevents the HIV virus from mutating and spreading, allowing patients to rebuild their immune system to the same levels as the rest of the population.

You can read the rest of the article here.

Woah. Glad to see some progress in science, though I'm a bit skeptical since the article mentions nothing about how they'll halt the growth. Unless I skimmed it too fast and missed it. >8

Sad thing is that "combination therapy" has been around for awhile now, or at least something like it - there a lots of wealthy people who have HIV but haven't gotten AIDS yet because they can afford expensive treatments - *nudge* where did the test subjects for this paper come from?

And this combination therapy sounds like it probably does take a while and in areas in Africa, where AIDS is rampant and people are scared of western medicine *http://africa.reuters.com/wire/news/usnL08312967.html* these kind of treatments won't reach them for at least 20 years.

After all - where is there money in "curing" HIV?

I'll agree, thats the sad but cold truth. Way too many people out "only for money" in this world, 90% of the 'modern world' (as in the rich-ass places, not the whole world) suffers from greed.

I mean seriously, money? It's not even peices of metal anymore, it's just printed paper with the words "I owe the holder the sum of" written on them.

Good to see there actually progressing with it, all you ever hear about is "cancer this" and "cancer that" for medical cures these days. Good to know there concentrating on -other- things too.

Yes sadly as my roomates mentioned this is simply yet another thing that is far more profitable to treat than to cure. :(

Wow, that's great news! *cheers*

I just hope it will be available to all...Especially to those kids in Africa who REALLY need it.

I will not be a cynic here, and just say that I'm glad you posted this. Thanks Candy-chan.
