He turned back to the man, who was still giving him that desperate look. Begging another to kill him…
He raised the gun, aiming directly between the man’s eyes. A headshot would be the best way to go. It would be quick, relatively painless, and there was a very small chance of error. He didn’t think he could bring himself to fire twice.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he was aware that the sound of a shot would bring his pursuers running. But he would just have to get away before they got here. There was nothing else for it.
The man’s expression had gone from despairing to pitiful gratefulness. “Thank you…thank you…” he murmured, meeting Kid’s eyes squarely.
Behind Kid’s mask, Kaito felt something inside him shatter.
“Go in peace,” he said softly.
And he pulled the trigger.
