Great news!
Apr. 3rd, 2009 05:21 pmSame-sex marriage legalized in Iowa.
In a unanimous decision from the State Supreme Court, no less. And you know, I'm actually okay with him adding that religion can continue to define marriage however it likes. That doesn't bother me, and I'm sort of hard-pressed to explain why.
I know there's going to be a fight over this before the ink is dry on the first marriage license, but for the moment, let's enjoy the victory for what it is: a step towards tolerance that I would not have expected from my home state, which is traditionally a red state--although we were blue for Obama.
For all the jokes and wisecracks and internet people asking if I have electricity (wish I was kidding about that), I have never been prouder to be from the Hawkeye State than I am right now.
ETA: My thoughts and condolences to the residents of Binghamton, NY, for the massacre that happened in their city and the innocent people who were hurt or killed. May you rise above this tragedy.

Date: 2009-04-03 10:43 pm (UTC)It doesn't bother me too much either. I think it's an encouragement of the further separation of church from state, which can only be a good thing. In the world, civil marriage is what counts for taxes and health insurance and etc etc etc after all.

Date: 2009-04-03 11:05 pm (UTC)Hopefully having such a red state on our side of the fight will help the cause. When it's Connecticut/Massachusetts/California allowing it, conservatives go "IT'S THE HEATHEN HIPPIE LIBERALS!" and dismiss us.
I'm still hoping that Obama will make it an amendment. Do something with that majority, damn it!

Date: 2009-04-04 01:55 am (UTC)Granted it is probably going to get ugly, much like California got all ugly with Prop 8. But I do like the further separation of church and state. Seriously, the discrimination that goes on through taxes, health insurance, hospital rights, and such is atrocious. I hope that acceptance and moving forward to a better society is the shift. Change is happening, but when it comes to societal standards and norms, it is a slow change.

Date: 2009-04-04 02:50 am (UTC)I'm okay with that, too, honestly. Separation of church and state and all. I really think it'd be best if states allowed it but let each church/synagouge/insert place of worship here decide for themselves if they'll recognize it. Cause I know some churches don't have a problem with it.
We were blue for Gore, too. The rest of Iowa is a lot more liberal than the blazing red on this side of the state.

Date: 2009-04-04 03:23 am (UTC)I read this on
But it's unfortunate that good news like this has to be accompanied by bad news at the same time. My thoughts are with the Binghamton residents as well. Such a horrible, horrible tragedy.

Date: 2009-04-04 03:28 am (UTC)It's really nice to have a federal government that isn't trying to lead us solely according to their religious beliefs!

Date: 2009-04-04 03:30 am (UTC)It's going to get ugly, I think. But...well, when my city council passed a resolution declaring that marriage was between a man and a woman, they did a poll. And surprisingly enough, the results were overwhelmingly angry that the council was "wasting time" on this when the economy is in such bad condition. I thought it was sort of funny, and I'm sure the city people were surprised.
We'll see what happens. But I'm going to enjoy the victory for what it is.

Date: 2009-04-04 03:33 am (UTC)Exactly. Let the churches decide which ones they'll sanctify, and let the rest of us do what we like. It makes me remember why I cried when Pope John Paul died. He said it was against God, but preached a message of tolerance and respect. He was a great man.
Really? Huh. I thought we were traditionally red. Mom said that's why she's registered Republican--so she can actually vote in the primaries.

Date: 2009-04-04 03:37 am (UTC)I know...those poor people. I think the newscaster said there are four more in critical condition--I hope they all pull through, and the death toll doesn't go any higher. How terrible...

Date: 2009-04-04 03:41 am (UTC)Honestly, I think more of the non-independant voters are Republican, but the Independants go for the Democrats more often. But yeah, you have to be in a party to go to the Caucuses and whatnot, which is mostly why I'm a registered Democrat.
