I gotta run upstairs for dinners, and will reply to comments very, very shortly, but I have a really quick question to toss out before I go.

DEAR ANYONE ON MY F-LIST WHO HAS READ THE VALDEMAR BOOKS BY MERCEDES LACKEY:

...how much backstory did they go into with Solaris?

There were a few books in the Valdemar collective that I never got around to reading, so I'm sure I missed out on important things. Plus, it's been a while since I read any of them, and that's really why I'm asking about this. For absolutely no reason other than my own innocent curiosity, of course :3c

Any answers would be happily exchanged for virtual cookies!


New reading material of the moment: Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones. I really like her writing style so far.

Well, Ulrich was her mentor figure. She was said to have gathered quite a bit of power up before the miracles happened. Oh! And there is a short story where she heals a bunch of wounded they were going to burn so there were no flesh sacrifices before she became Son of Sun.

AHHHHHHHHHH I just have to comment because I LOVE those books. I so devoured them in high school but...I've definitely not caught up. :-/ Bad me I know. So just because I'm curious now, who is/what books are Solaris from? I really do need to go back and catch up!

I own Howl's Moving Castle. It makes a whole lot more sense than the movie (based off it) ever did.

My friend writergurl was reading the Last Herald Mage books, so I went and picked up the only complete trilogy the library had at the moment: the first three. I read Arrows of the Queen, Arrow's Flight, and Arrow's Fall in three days. One book a day. I've read most of the Valdemar series, except the Mage Winds and Mage Storms.

Solaris popped up in a few short stories and a novella for sure...she became the Son of the Sun (because she actually was blessed by Vkandis Sunlord) and thus the leader of Karse. His son became his daughter *takes off nerd hat*

I haven't read Valdemar in ages, m'self XD That's why I had to ask this question to see if there was something I'd forgotten or missed from the books I hadn't read yet.

That's what I've heard. I did enjoy the movie, but in hindsight it's sort of like...well, how I felt about Coraline. Good movie in its own right, but the book puts the pieces together much more effectively, if that makes sense.

Also? DIANA WYNN JONES ROCKS. She's so totally awesome. I get the feeling you'd really like her Crestomanci series as well. He's soooo like Ten sometimes.

I haven't seen a ton of Studio Ghibli movies, to be honest. I've seen Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Kat tells me I need to see Totoro, though >_> But the two I watched were kinda bizarre, yes.

I haven't read any of her stuff in a really long time. Back in high school I plowed through most of the Valdemar series and a couple of her stand-alones.

You're the second person to recommend the Chrestomanci series to me xD I think that I need to give these a read, along with Discworld. Maybe I should join up with 50bookchallenge after all XD

The nice thing about the Crestomanci series, especially for a prolific reader like you, is that it's a kid's book, so it's not only brilliant but totally easy to read. I read all six in about a week (would have been faster if I had been able to get all six at BAM, but I had to wait for Amazon). And to make your life easier, all six are in two-novel compilations. In the order she published them. They're not chronological, but you really should read them in that order so life makes sense.

Also, she has something out called "The Tough Guide to Fantasyland." READ IT. It is hilarious, you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

Diana Wynne Jones = Awesome. Period.

Just for further info- Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways are both continuations of Howl's Moving Castle. Castle in the Air not so much, but Howl, Sophie, and Calcifer all make rather good-sized appearances (moreso than you realize at the beginning of the book). However, House of Many Ways is the official sequel.

I'd also like to recomment The Dark Lord of Derkholm and it's sequel, Year of the Griffin. Talking griffins = win.

Dogsbody is wonderful too, but it's been a long time since I've read it. Same with the Crestomanci series.
