Fun thing happened to me today. Or rather, funny.
In choir, we're singing a song called "Homeland." I sang this song in high school, and adore it. However, in high school I sang the second soprano part. Now I'm an alto II. I didn't have a chance to ask PK if I could sing second, so I was sitting with the altos...but singing SII. After the first run-through, two girls turned around all scared that they were singing the wrong part. When I told them that I'd sung the song before on a different part, one of them (a freshman) kinda laughed and asked where I'd sung it.
The other one--a transfer student--asked something that shocked me. She looked me straight in the eye--kid you not--and asked (are you all ready for this), "Well, don't you read music?"
...double-you...tee...eff??? Let's review here: PK has just introduced me as one of her Academic Assistants to the entire choir class. I'm a senior vocal music education major. I'M IN YOUR EFFIN' SECONDARY VOCAL METHODS CLASS!! And you...are standing there...asking if I know how to read music??
Amber and Brit were sitting next to me, and both their jaws dropped. Then we had to sing, but as our section was sitting back down, I leaned forward--figuring maybe she didn't remember me, as we'd only had one class--and said, "I'm in your Methods class." And she says, "I know, but that doesn't mean you can read music."
Again--whiskey tango foxtrot??? Umm...yes. Yes, it actually does mean that I know how to read music. If I couldn't, I would not have survived Music Theory. Jerry would probably have eaten me ALIVE!! Possibly with ketchup. It's pretty damn hard to survive as a music major unless you can read music--I learned when I was in preschool, for crying out loud!
In case you couldn't tell, I was a wee bit insulted ~.~;; But it was kind of funny to listen to Amber snickering about how idiotic the question was. Especially when the altos had to stand up and sing--so I joined in and sight-read the alto part, and nailed it probably ninety percent. I've always been a pretty good sight-reader. And as we sat down, I turned to Amber and made the comment, "I've never sung that part before." And she grinned and said, "Good thing you know how to read music."
In the end, we all had a good laugh out of it...but I was insulted at the time. But I have Methods with her tomorrow. We should totally do a sight-reading exercise *innocent face* But anyway, I give you purdy lyrics!!
I vow to you, my country, all earthly things above
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love
The love that never falters, the love that stands the test
That lays up on the altar, the dearest and the best
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice
Though the road has bends and turns and my spirit suffers
Humans fail, systems fail, shadows fall
But the ruts run deep, cut by the blood of faces above
And voices now silent--but the message loud is heard
"Homeland! Homeland! Renew your youth! Restore your soul!"
Homeland, the country that I love, hold out your arms to me
I strive for you and give you the best I hope to be
May your wisdom be your honor, your compassion be your sword
May your strength be forged with mercy, your courage lives restore
Homeland, the country that I love, forever reign supreme
And when time stands still, my homeland, may heaven hold your dream
My homeland!
Be my dream, my hope
Homeland! Homeland!
My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentations
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear that music ringing
It sounds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble sick with fear
And hear their death knells ringing
When friends rejoice, both far and near
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell or dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging
When dear friends are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?
What if my joys and comforts die?
I know that truth is living
What tho' the darkness round me close
Still Truth its light is giving
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging
Since love is Lord of Heav'n and Earth
How can I keep from singing?
I lift my eyes, the cloud grows thin
I see the blue above it
And day by day this pathway smooths
Since first I learned to love it
The peace from love makes fresh my heart
A song of hope is springing
All things are mine since truth I've found
How can I keep from singing?
EDIT: Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure the funniest thing EVER was on the Whose Line episode I watched tonight. They were playing Greatest Hits, and the theme was Westerns. And...well...
Ryan: Hey Col--here's a riddle. What bird says only the name of the next band on the album?
*long pause*
Colin: A...tern. *pause* An Arctic tern.
Ryan: ...and what sound does an Arctic tern make?
Colin: *in this really squawky voice* BACKstreet BOYS!
*break in the action while Ryan laughs hard enough to have tears coming out of his eyes*
The answer was actually "an owl," and the band was "The Who." Go fig ♥
