Sep. 18th, 2006 09:42 amHad this one lying around for a few days. Just haven't quite gotten around to it until now.
(Read that as "I'm in class and I'm very, very bored.")
1) Keyboard or biro?
When I was starting out on my fanfiction-writing career, I was in high school. I did not have a laptop at school, so many a short ficcie was scribbled in the back of one of my notebooks. I think I actually had a whole series of "I got bored during fourth period" ficlets. Then I'd take it home, type it out, and beef it up a bit.
Now I'm in college, with my lurvly laptop to follow me everywhere. And unless I have absolutely no other recourse, I can't go back to pen and paper. I've tried, and the fics just don't like to be written that way. I'm a technology junkie like that ^.~
2) Beta or no beta?
For the average ficlet? No beta. I like to think I manage all right on shorter fics, up to maybe 1500 words. If I get longer than that...it depends on the plot. Sometimes I'll toss one over to a friend to check a twist or something. Generally...I'm an independent little brat, and I don't like to ask for help ^^;;
If it's REALLY long, or really complicated, I will usually ask a friend to beta for me.
msbbt was kind enough to beta Holding His Gaze for me (considering she spawned it, too), and
ladyerisnos was lovely enough to beta Sorrowful Soul for me (all eleven thousand words of it).
Sometimes I do sneak-peeks, too.
jeva_chan owns a piece of my soul for her Vampire fic ♥
3)Title?
With the way I save my files (especially challenge-fics), I title them pretty early...but sometimes the titles change. Sometimes the titles appear without resistance, and sometimes I hate the title even after I post it, but I can't think of anything better ^^;;
4) Smushy or smutty?
I've written both...not necessarily well ^^;; Generally, I stick to smushy. I loves me some fluff!
5) Summary?
Oh gods, I HATE writing summaries. I suck at them. I do them after the fic is done...it's really hard to sum up a two thousand word story in one, maybe two sentences, without giving away anything too important >.>
6) Funniest fic?
Ummm...I think What You Wish For is going to turn out to be a real ride. I'm also very proud of Anticlimax, aka The Joke That Will Not Die *pokes Kat* And I owe
magic_truth my firstborn for Hawaii Days.
7) Most popular fic?
In terms of reviews? Once Upon a Chibi, my last DBZ fic, takes that honor. Otherwise...What You Wish For is again looking like it might turn out to be pretty popular ♥
8) Most Fun to Write?
Once Upon a Chibi was a lot of fun to brainstorm and write...and I found that I like challenge fics! I also had a good time with Anticlimax.
9) Best and Worst?
Ehehe...I look at my older fics (back in my DBZ days), and I cringe. Just because stylistically and comprehensively I have grown as a writer, and it's painfully obvious. Best...I'd honestly have to say Sorrowful Soul. I am unbelievably proud of that story. It was hard to write, and it took me a long time to finish, but it was worth it.
10) Coulda Been Contenders?
...not sure I understand the question ^^;;
11) Strengths?
At the risk of tooting my own horn, I'd say versatility. On ff-dot-net, the only genre I haven't written in is 'Sci-Fi.' I do romance, humor, angst, drama...all of it. I'm also rather proud of my individual writing style (though I do like to play around with different things and POVs and such)--I read a lot, and my style is actually sort of a mish-mash thing. I habitually see things in the works of authors I admire, and adapt them into my own style. Mercedes Lackey is a big one.
12) Weaknesses?
I have a massive issue with pacing. Rarely do I feel like the pacing is exactly right, though for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix it. I also occasionally have to deal with half-formed ideas that don't really want to go anywhere. Those are not fun, and then I get irritated with the way they turn out. Wrestling with one of those right now, actually... *clobbers it with a mallet*
13) Dirty little secrets?
I rarely write in a linear fashion--for some reason, I tend to have difficulties starting at the beginning (Point A), and writing straight through to the end (Point Z). I might start with Point A, and then skip over to Point F, and maybe write a few sentences at Point Q...and then link everything together in the end. It usually works out somehow ^^;;
