More tales from the Phantom of the Opera viewing...
We had a lot of kids missing today for a band thing. So I didn't want them to watch *too* much. So we spent the first half the period recapping everything that had happened thus far in the movie and discussing some points that they weren't clear on--like when we had a short but interesting discussion as to why the pageboy in the opera was played by a girl. I used the example of how on stage, Peter Pan is almost ALWAYS played by a woman. I also pointed out that in many cartoons, young male characters are voiced by women.
We also discussed the idea of the Punjab Lasso and the "hand at the level of your eyes" thing. If your hand is held up in front of your face and the lasso is slipped over your head, then it should catch on your arm, and you won't be strangled. They liked that XD
It's also fun to put things from the musical into modern teen-speak. I borrowed a page from the
m15m version with the notes section--Carlotta's note says "YOU STINK AND SO DOES THE DOGGEH!" and the manager's says "PONY UP MY CASH!" and Raoul's says "STAY AWAY FROM CHRISTINE, YOU JERK!" We had a lot of fun discussing it, and I think discussing it every day is helping a lot with understanding the plot and some of the "why" of the story.
Anyway, then we watched a little bit. We watched "All I Ask of You" (which a couple of them recognized from hearing it at weddings), and the "Masquerade" scene. And yet again, we managed to end it on a cliffhanger. Namely, the part where the Phantom drops through the floor in an explosion of flame. I hit pause and went to turn the lights on...and turned around and found them all out of their seats and coming towards me, hollering protests.
...I turned it back on for the next thirty second scene with Raoul in the mirror room.
Then the bell rang XD
On Monday, I think we're going to recap again, and then start with "Masquerade" to lead into the rest of it. I hope we stop at another cliffhanger so I can chuckle at the responses. A couple of the other teachers have been following our progress through this movie--they like to hear what cliffhanger we ended on, and how the kids reacted XD

summerwrite is so far, so good. I'm way ahead of schedule, as you can see from the counter at the bottom of this entry. To be right on track with minimum daily word count, I'd need 2440 words. I have over three times that :D It makes me happy!
I'm actually working on hmtl-ing up a pretty archive page for myself on this to keep track of what I've written for it, what's been counted in the word-count, etc. Don't know how well it'll go, but it'll eventually be up over on
candyfics. Locked up right now while I try to muddle through the wonders of html with the help of a couple of guides XD
...and that's really about it. Plunnie-ing like crazy!
