Summertime!!!
May. 25th, 2004 10:48 pmSometimes I actually forget I have this thing. I'll try to do better, I promise.
Whew...it's been an interesting couple of days. I unwittingly got drawn into a debate.
An author, who out of respect I won't name, left a rather rude review on someone's ExT fic, stating that ExT was..well, impossible. On the request of a friend and fellow ExT supporter, I emailed this author, stating my opinion. I learned a long time ago that in situations like these, where people are defending something they feel passionately about, it's far better to be polite and be willing to discuss then to do what I know some other people did, and relentlessly flame the person's fics.
So I was as polite as I could be, though I did see the review, and I did have to say it was quite obnoxious, and I told this author so. She was quite polite as well when she emailed me back, and she did admit that the review was obnoxious. But it has been an interesting debate over the ExT vs. ExK fanfics within the Cardcaptor Sakura community.
As a musician and a writer, I'm a big believer in the concept of creative license. CLAMP (the creators of Cardcaptor Sakura) sent their art--their manga--out into the world for us to read, praise, criticize, enjoy, hate, and interpret. That last is the most important because that's what art is--interpretation. And while the EriolxTomoyo pairing might not be canon, it is a legitimate interpretation of the art. Furthermore, I support all canon pairings (pairings within the actual storylines). For that reason, I will truthfully support EriolxKaho, if someone else wants to write about them. But the fact is that I just don't like Kaho's character. But I like Eriol, and I see potential in the ExT pairing.
She actually was kind of angry about 'my friends' flaming her fics in retaliation for her comments, which she has every right to be. There are better ways to handle this--as I said, manners can often work wonders.
It has actually been an enjoyable experience to debate this. And like I said, I've found that politeness gets a person much further in a situation like this then arguments and flames will. And I think I got a much more agreeable response to my email than a couple of my internet friends did *sweatdrops* And I know I didn't change her mind, just as she didn't change mine. But it was actually fun to debate a little, and we were both quite civil about it. And who knows? Maybe I'll actually feel inspired by this to someday write an ExK fanfic! *runs off to hide before Kyte-chan gets here* Or not. I don't know. But it has been an experience.
Onward and upward, finals are over, and I am sitting on my home computer, sleeping in my own bed, and eating my mother's wonderful home-cooked meals. I think it's time for the happy dance! *Candy-chan does the happy dance, trips over her own two feet, and falls out the window*
*A moment later, a bruised, battered, and bleeding Candy-chan crawls back in through the window and back to the computer* Owww...
Anyway, I go back to work at Hy-Vee tomorrow. Not exactly a career, but it is a paycheck. With the economy this bad, I feel pretty lucky to have my spot in my little department (I work Chinese/Italian). So I can't complain too much, except when I work with a few certain people who shall remain nameless. They drive me nuts. But I can deal.
Also, my nerdy otaku side is doing victory dances because I am now the proud owner of two--count them, TWO--seasons worth of Sailor Moon in all its original, Japanese, subtitled, uncut goodiness/splendor/glory/whatever other words you might have to describe the majesty.
As a result of this, I was inspired to write my first SM fanfic, which I'm fairly proud of, and I've been rediscovering my otaku roots. Sailor Moon was my first anime, back before I even knew what anime was, and it's been ages since I've seen it. So it's been a real treat and a real trip down memory lane for me, coming back to it after all these years. I mean, I first watched it--the DUB--when I was in, oh, fifth or sixth grade. Now that I've just finished my first year of college, I return to it.
Well, it is late, so I am going to go check the plethora of webcomics that I frequent. Are you seeing the nerd pattern continue to emerge? I watch anime, I write fanfics, I read webcomics, and I have a webjournal. Wow. I scare myself sometimes. Oh well.
Webcomics, and bed. I have to work tomorrow, and I'm still not done unpacking. This will be a fun week...until next time!
Loves, kisses, and illegal herbs,
Candy-chan ^_^

Date: 2004-05-25 09:22 pm (UTC)Not sure which one was my otaku roots. I think it was either Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z. Cartoon Network baby! After awhile I kind of got sick of SM and like I said before now the only scene I ever want to watch again from SM is the one where Usagi transform in front of Tuxedo Mask (which I still have to get by the way/thanks for the episode number)
Good luck with work (how many hours?) and have fun unpacking everything @_@ I got to sleep just because I'm still stuck in school...bites.
