Summary: Sometimes we just need a reminder that we’re being thought of.

Ran was surprised one morning when she stepped out of the agency, and found a package, wrapped in pale blue paper, sitting on the stairs, waiting patiently to be found. She was even more surprised when she looked at the white envelope attached to the top of the box, and saw that it was addressed to her in a handwriting that she knew all too well.

She glanced around, but saw no one. Trying not to feel disappointed, she shrugged and went back inside, bringing the mysterious box with her. Her father was still sleeping off the remnants of last night’s celebration—what exactly he’d been celebrating was still a mystery, but it was bound to result in a hangover and a whole lot of whining. And Conan was nowhere in sight.

The office was empty, so she took a seat on the couch and carefully pulled the envelope from the box, careful not to tear anything. She flipped it open and slipped out a small piece of folded paper; she instantly recognized the neat handwriting across the page as belonging to her long-absent friend…

Setting the box aside for the moment, she read…

Ran,

Sorry I haven’t been around as much as we’d both like lately. This case…well, it’s frustrating, to say the least. I wish I could just forget about it, but that’s really not an option at the moment, so this is the way it has to be for now. I wish it wasn’t, but…it can’t be helped. I’m sorry.

I know it’s been a while since we’ve actually seen each other. But I thought you would like this. No, there’s no occasion or anything. I was just thinking about you—yes, I do think about you, silly girl, more than you probably realize. And I do miss you, whether you believe it or not. Sometimes when I call, it’s because I feel like I’m going to lose my mind…and then I hear your voice and know you’re okay, and it helps.

So keep smiling, okay? And you’d better enjoy your present!

Shinichi.

For what felt like infinite moments, Ran forgot how to breathe.

Shinichi was one of those guys who didn’t usually come right out and just say how he felt about things—her, in particular. He usually preferred showing to telling. He would tease her mercilessly, until she was angry enough that she couldn’t see straight, and then one night he would show her a certain spot in the park where the stars were so clear and so close you could almost reach out and touch them, or show her a rainbow appearing like magic in the spray of a fountain…

Yet he’d admitted—on paper, no less—that he missed her. How bad were things where he was?

But her curiosity soon turned to the wrapped box beside her, as any normal person’s would. A present, Shinichi’s note had said. A present for her. Before she knew it, she was tugging the light blue wrapping paper away from the box and pulling it open and eagerly looking down into it to see what was waiting for her.

A conch shell looked back at her, nestled amidst a protective nest of white tissue paper.

Ran reached into the box, carefully lifted the shell, and studied it, turning it over in her hands. The outside was rougher, spiky in a few places, and sort of a beige-white color. The inside, though, was smooth and polished and had more of a pink tone to it.

A fleeting thought from her childhood hit her, and she put the opening to her ear and listened. She could hear the ocean—it sounded like waves crashing against the shore and each other.

She was probably smiling like at idiot as she looked back down at the note, she noticed more handwriting at the very bottom of the paper, also in Shinichi’s neat handwriting.

I know you like the ocean. When I get back, we’ll go there together. Until then, hope this’ll do.

Ran felt herself blush, both at the thought of going there with Shinichi, and at the implications of that statement. There was an underlying message there, if one knew to look for it: I’ll come back.

Taken by a sudden thought, Ran sprinted to her room and grabbed her cell phone and brought it back to the office with her, sitting down on the couch beside Shinichi’s gift. It didn’t take her long to type in a quick message: thank you, the usual hope that she’d get to see him again soon, and some random text that seemed to serve no purpose aside from filling space, but carried a lot more meaning when one was careful enough to read between the lines.

She stared at the cell phone screen for a few seconds, wavering, before she made her decision, and added one more thing to the end of the message: XXX, Ran. Without giving herself time to debate over that, she pressed the button to send the message on its way to Shinichi’s cell phone.

Sighing, she sat back against the couch, wondering vaguely if the great detective had figured out what X meant, anyway. She blushed furiously as she thought of his reaction, were he to ever piece together that the letter stood for a kiss.

The conch shell sat on the couch beside her. Ran, still slightly in a daze from the gift and the note, looked at it for a moment before picking it up again and putting it back to her ear.

She didn’t notice a pair of blue eyes, watching her knowingly through glass lenses. Conan smiled at her happiness, and made a mental note to thank his parents for sending him that little souvenir from their most recent visit to Hawaii. He’d been looking for something for her as it was, and it had arrived at the opportune time. He watched her quietly from the doorway (he’d cracked the door open so she hopefully wouldn’t notice him) for a few moments longer before withdrawing.

Ran never saw him there.

She was too preoccupied with listening to the sound of waves, and thinking about Shinichi.

PS. I liked the conch shell idea, for some reason. Just something a little different, or so I'd like to think. It was almost the infamous Hawaii conversation, but that wound up as a one-shot instead. Hope you enjoyed the random fluffiness. Four more to go! Much love, ciao for now!

Aww, thank you! I'm glad you liked my story!

Hmmm...that does make some sense. But if he's so sure that she's that stuck on him, then he shouldn't be thinking that every guy she talks to is going to sweep her off her feet, straight to the altar. I can understand him being jealous, because he can't be there with her right then. But he shouldn't be so paranoid...silly boy!

As for Ran, I think you've probably hit it right on the head. Although...why is it always a hot blonde, and they're in bed? She thinks Shinichi has these amazing Powers of Seduction or something! It's just amusing...

And don't worry about over-analyzing. My friend [livejournal.com profile] msbbt and I had a thirty-minute discussion over our guesses for the dub names of future characters. We were a few light-years off on Nakamori-keibu's, though...*shudder*

xD And every time his vision of Ran in a wedding dress is different. He's so creative. xD

Shinichi *is* pretty irresistible... <3 <3 Can't blame Ran. xD

The dub names for Case Closed were pretty... unimaginative, IMO. I just can't figure out how Shinichi became Jimmy... *shudder* ;;

If the whole detective thing doesn't work out, he could always go into designing wedding dresses. Fetching and flattering, yet preserving the bride's...modesty ^^;;

*snickers* Gosho Aoyama deserves to win the Nobel Prize for creating a whole cast full of yummy, lovable characters for us to read about, torment, drool over, and analyze ^__^

Honestly, I could deal with most of the dub names. They weren't terribly creative, but I could live with the majority of them (although Serena Sebastian sounds like a stripper name, IMHO). But...what did they do to Nakamori-keibu? How did Ginzo Nakamori become Mace Fuller???? My friend Kelly summed it up best when I told her:

"Mace? MACE? Like, you spray into people's eyes so you can run away? Like, the spiky thing you swing over your head to decapitate the other person? MACE?!?"

ROFL. Shinichi designing dresses. xD That'll be awesome to see.

Gosho Aoyama should auction his characters off. So that we can do whatever we like with them... <3

Really - they actually translated Nakamori-keibu's name? O.O;;;
Though I'd have to say that was one of the more creative ones. ;;

Serena Sebastian just doesn't sound like a name suitable for a rich girl... (It actually reminds me of a butler... but that's just me, maybe?) <<;

*imagines Nakamori-keibu as a big spiky thing....* *shudders*

And Heiji would have to design bikinis, of course. Hmmm, I wonder if Kazuha would be willing to model for him... *slips merrily away into Happy Fangirl Land*

I wouldn't hurt Shinichi, Heiji, Kaito, Hakuba, etc. I'd just, ya know, make them my love slaves enjoy their company and intelligent conversation. *looks innocent*

...I just had the weirdest Mental Picture of Evil.

Serena Sebastian: Under da sea...under da sea...

Just kidding! *is shot*

Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking with that dub name. We were putting our money on Greg Nelson or something simple like that. Nope, we got Mace Fuller. I snicker every time I type that, and I can barely even say it out loud without dying. I wonder who came up with that one, honestly. Makes me cringe when I realize that they haven't gotten to Kazuha, Aoko, or Ai yet (although I heard from a friend that Ai will be Anita Haley).

*imagines Nakamori-keibu getting sprayed in people's eyes* *headdesks and dies from thoughts going in directions they should not*

Shinichi's such a sweetie...

I started reading the Hawaii fic, but haven't finished or written a review yet. (My cousin booted me off the computer before I could finish...;.;)

*gasps* Mace? You kidding me? Anita Haley? *dies* I know Kazuha's though... IMO, it sounds like the name of a spoiled brat or something... It is...Katie Thompson...But I guess it's not as bad as MACE FULLER...

Yeah, that's pretty much the epitome of BAD DUB NAMES. I bet somebody suggested that as a joke, and it just stuck.
