candyland: (surprised)

Yesterday in Music History, we were talking about contemporary and twentieth century music. Jeanette, the prof, showed us the actual score of a piece called Makrokosmos by a composer named George Crumb. Now, the first couple ones looked sort of normal, if a bit on the odd side in terms of harmonies. But a couple pages later, the piece was in two lines...put together in the shape of a freakin' cross. There was another one in the shape of a circle, so you could just keep going and going for as long as you wanted to play it. Another one was in a spiral--Jeanette said that one was actually blown up and framed to go in an Art Museum.

Aside from the unique writing of the actual score, there was something I found extremely interesting-slash-amusing. Each of the pieces was named after a Zodiac sign, right? Well, I asked Jeanette if there was one for Scorpio, simply because it's my sign, and she showed it to me--the title is "The Phantom Gondolier."

Why did I find this all so amusing? The tempo marking at the beginning of the Scorpio movement: Creepy, with a sense of malignant evil.

I giggled. A lot. Anyone else find it ironic? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Let me just say I am not entirely surprised.
And not that being "Creepy, with a sense of malignant evil" is bad or anything. I mean hell, I've lived with my brother for years now.
And some people just look so cute when creepy.
