So I sliced my finger open today...
Jun. 24th, 2006 10:26 pmFirst things first: on a bright note, the Closer Than Ever soundtrack continues to rock as I listen to more and more songs from it. Also on a bright note, I think I finally have some sort of an idea for the fic swap on
manycases1truth. I feel really bad that I'm taking so long, but I didn't get my challenge until several days after everyone else due to the viral issue. Luckily, the mods there are most awesome ^^
Now, onto the rest of the stuff. It's been a very, very, very looooooong day for Miss Candy-chan. Started this morning when I went in for a little grooming. My eyebrows look fantastic, but my hair is now...short. Really short. Like, not even shoulder length. It used to be a few inches past my shoulders. I asked her to take off two inches and toss a couple layers on the bottom ~.~;; So the outside temp is roughly 'surface of the sun,' I work in a food place around ovens and stoves, and my hair isn't long enough to be pulled back into a ponytail anymore. But I know it could be worse--at least hair grows back, and now I can do the cute pigtails again. *laugh* If Steve was near me, he'd immediately start pawing at them.
And speaking of work...
I'm back at the hellhole known as Hy-Vee (a grocery store chain, for those of you not from the Midwest), back in the Chinese/Italian department for yet another fun summer of explaining to people that yes the pizzas freeze well and no it's all white meat in the chickens and I'm sorry but I can't substitute lo mein for rice on a dinner for four.
The amazing thing is that I really don't mind my job most days. I've worked there four summers, so I know how to do most of the stuff that goes on back there, short of the actual cooking and sauce mixing. I work with some interesting people, and I usually have a pretty good time with Jason and Renee. Matt...I like the kid, but I sort of wish he'd A) speak, and B) move faster than molasses in January. The thing is that when work sucks, it SUCKS. *starts singing "All the Small Things"*
Anyway, I got called in an hour early today, so my five-hour shift became a six-hour shift. Okay, whatever. And our manager wasn't there--thank God. He's a good guy, and I know he wants our little department to be successful. But...I get a little nervous at the way he's always hovering over my shoulder or acting like I don't know anything or telling me to do six things at once and then getting all frazzled when nothing gets done. Oh well--he hasn't been the manager back there for too long, so hopefully he'll relax and realize that we've functioned as a department quite successfully for quite some time ^^
I think the shift manager was getting sick of us back there, 'cause Matt kept jamming the register and we'd hafta get a manager to come back and void it. Probably half a dozen times in the six hours I was there.
Sooooo went about work as usual. I did have one really cute moment--I was making a pizza, and had a handful of pepperoni (and might I take this opportunity to say that I make a damn fine pizza *shameless grin*) when I hear this little voice say, "What's she doing?" So I look up, and there's three little boys, maybe around eight years old or so, staring at me through the glass. Mom was standing behind them, and she said, "That lady's making pizza." So they asked what kind I was making, and I said pepperoni. Then one little boy asked, "Can I help?" I told him that my boss would probably say no, and so instead they asked if they could have some pepperoni. The mom gave me a little nod, so I gave them each a couple pepperoni slices. It was kinda cute--I had an audience!
The night continues. Chong (the cook) asks me to chop some peppers. Nothing too major, right? But of course, my bad day has to continue. I'm looking right at the cutting board. My attention has not diverted to anything. I blink...and suddenly there's this spasm of pain and there's an awful lot of blood running down my thumb O_O
I was honestly getting worried that I'd have to go to the hospital or something--it felt like it took forever for the bleeding to stop. Got back to work (not chopping veggies, thank you), closed down, came home, and Daddy took care of it. I hafta go in on Monday to do the accident report thing, though--the shift manager couldn't find the form. Oh well--it's not their fault. I feel kinda silly saying it's my own stupid fault, because I was watching what I was doing, but if I had to lay blame, then yeah, it's my own stupid fault ^^
But I'm really excited--Little Sister is going off to register for college, and Mommy and Daddy are going with her. They leave at seven AM tomorrow morning...and don't get back until Monday afternoon. Translation: I HAVE THE HOUSE TO MYSELF FOR TWO DAYS!!! WHOOOOOOO!!
Much love to
ammchan, who I hope is having a BLAST in Thailand, and to
msbbt, who I hope is living it up in Chicago and who I will hopefully get to see and/or glomp senseless at some point this summer...hearts to you!!
