An ff-dot-net horror story...

My friend Janna has an account on ff-dot-net. We don't cross a ton of fandoms, but it's still cool to know that you've got friends on there, ne? And Janna, while your average obsessive fangirl about her various loves (Gerard Butler, anyone?), is generally a pretty level-headed customer.
So she AIM's me today. First words out of her mouth are that someone on ff-dot-net made her really mad. I'm no stranger to this feeling, but I've never seen anything like this before. Someone had added her LotR fic (on which she's gotten relatively good reviews) to a C2 entitled "The Worst of the Worst," which listed over 400 fanfictions as the absolute worst things in the Lord of the Rings section. The summary reads: Weep. Laugh. Spork. This is a collection of some of the worst LotR fanfiction ever.
Just wait. It gets better.
The creator of this C2 isn't an author. Hasn't posted a single fanfiction, and obviously doesn't intend to, as his/her/it's entire bio (and I do think of people like this as 'it') consists of: I like to count bad stories. It a morbid fascination; a way to gawk at the fandoms and think, wow, what a load of shit! Why am I associating myself with you again? In other words, this person created this account for the sole purpose of making this C2. Janna's never received a single review from this person, either--no proof that IT even read her story.
Janna is a reasonable girl, and she wanted to get in touch with this person to request that her fic be removed. However, IT is obviously a coward as well as a moron. No email address on their profile, and disabled Private Messaging. Now thoroughly irritated, she did a little research and reported the community. And she was good enough to copy and paste her report so that I could read it. With her blessing, I post it here for my fellow fanficcers to read and applaud.
Recently one of my fan fictions has been added to a C2 called "The Worst of the Worst" in the Lord of the Rings book section: http://www.fanfiction.net/c2/26711/3/0/1/
Its creator has done nothing else on this website but create this C2. I have not been given a reason as to why my fan fic is terrible, and so far I have gotten positive reviews on my chapters. Thus, I do not appreciate my fan fic being in a negative group like this, and I am sure other authors feel the same. I have worked extremely hard on my story and have checked grammar and punctuation several times (although errors are still possible and WILL be corrected when noticed). It is not the stories in this C2 that are the problem, only the C2 itself for catigoizing over 400 stories as terrible.
Thus, this C2 violates this rule #3 in the Restrictions section of the TOS: C2 community is to be used to promote and showcase recommended stories only and is not be used to highlight negative aspects of entries.
I could not contact the creator to ask to be deleted from this catigory since the creator has blocked all contact. If this problem is dealt with, I and many other authors will be very grateful.
Thank you very much.
Professional. Concise. Polite. I think she covered all her bases here, including pointing out that the stories are not the problem--I heard about a bunch of stories getting deleted because someone on a personal vendetta reported that all the fics in this one C2 had bad punctuation or something. For her own protection, I told her to include that the stories weren't the issue.
So high fives to you, Janna, and I hope this gets taken care of soon! I'm generally not a huge advocate of the reporting thing (it just feels like tattling to me...), but this is ridiculous.

Sometimes I wonder why I'm on ff-net, lol.

Date: 2006-08-22 03:24 am (UTC)I know why I stick around on ff-dot net: the audience. It's the biggest and farthest reaching place to post your stuff, and has the largest audience. At the base level, I do write for myself and because I enjoy it, but I also like the feedback and to know that someone's actually reading what I write. Hence, I put up with ff-dot-net.
But that's just me.
