Since my middle schoolers had their concert last week, I thought a musical movie would be a good way to pass the time. So I decided on Phantom of the Opera. The newest one, with Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler (*drool*) and the missing Hanson brother Patrick Wilson. When I first told them, a few gave me skeptical looks XD When we were getting ready to start it, here was my preface...

ME: By a show of hands...how many of you like mysteries?
*every hand goes up*
ME: How many of you like action, adventure, fights, chases, murder, etc.?
*every hand goes up*
ME: How many of you like romance?
*a few hands go down, and one boy makes a joke*
ME: Expected that. How many of you like music in any way, shape, or form?
*every hand goes up*
ME: Then most of you will probably enjoy this movie.

They really liked the part where the chandelier rises and the theatre transforms to the way it was (very, very loudly), though I had to explain what the black-and-white vs. color segments meant. Oh, and Carlotta amused them :D

Oh, and I made them a deal--I said that if they were reasonably quiet and attentive and watched the movie without problems...they wouldn't have to take a test over it. They're taking me at my word, which is good. Most of the chatter was them asking me questions about what was happening or what something meant, and that doesn't bother me. They were engaged and curious, and I support curiosity. Plus, if they keep being good, I might bring snacks on the last day of the movie ^_~

But the best part? I glanced up and saw that class was almost over. So I walked over and waited until the end of that song--it was right where Christine is reaching into the mirror and taking the Phantom's hand before the titular number starts. And I hit pause and turned to say we'd pick it back up there on Wednesday...and was met with a chorus of "NUUUUUUUUUU!!" and "ONE MORE SONG!" and "KEEP GOING!" *laugh* That made me happy.

And [livejournal.com profile] summerwrite starts the day after tomorrow. Wish me luck! :D

Awwwwwww~

I wish I were in your class instead of the ones I'm taking now. ESPECIALLY at this time of year.

I'd flunk down to middle school if I could >:(

(Lol I never watched the movie. Is it really good?)

Aww... *snuggles* I'd like to have you in my class :D But don't flunk down 0.0 That will make things worse! Study hard!

I rather like the movie--I know a lot of people didn't, but I love it. I don't live in a place where I have ready access to Broadway shows, save for what decides to visit us on tour. So movies like this are a godsend for me.

Oh my God, I'm just like your students -.-'

My mom and my sister has always loooooved Phantom of the Opera and has been to the theater and watched it several times. I've watched it two times - because they made me. And I said "NO YOU FREAKS" when they told me, that I should watch the movie with Gerard Butler. So they started watching it without me. And then I walked by, stopped and stared, and sat down.
And the next couple of days, I learned all the songs.

I'm so glad that you're students makes you smile :b

I'm just a nut for musicals. Love the things! Wish I could see more on stage...but I'm not in an area where that's readily available *sigh*

Phantom is special to me because it was my introduction to Broadway. My parents had the soundtrack, and I can remember growing up and coming upstairs on Sunday mornings to see my parents cleaning and blaring that soundtrack. I got hooked on the titular song first, and the rest soon followed.

The Gerard Butler movie...my friend [livejournal.com profile] bishonen_girl worked at the movie theatre, so we went together (I got to go for free!)...and then we went to the next show too because we loved it so much. I love the movie. The story, the music, the visuals...there's so much beauty in that picture ~♥

I heart my kids :D They make me smile a LOT.

You'd bring your middle schoolers snacks? They're so lucky to have you as their teacher. . . . (=^.^=)

Oooh, the movie adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera seems interesting. I'm actually planning on reading the book this year! XD

Good luck with [livejournal.com profile] summerwrite! As interesting as it is to join, school'll start sucking out the life out of me in a little more than month. Sigh . . . there should be a Philippine version for this, darn it!

And since I'm slightly paranoid that my f-list doesn't read my entries, I tag you for this meme! And poke you here, although you don't have to do that.

Not all of them think so, I'm sure...but if the rest of it goes as well as Monday did, I'll bring them something. I don't know what just yet, but...something.

It's the movie adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, which was my first Broadway soundtrack. I downloaded the book from LibriVox (http://librivox.org/) and listened to it. It's pretty good--although Raoul cries more than Christine XD

Thanks! I'm going to get as much of my outline finalized as possible so when midnight chimes, I can pounce!

I'm paranoid too v_v Oooh! I will give it a look later! I sometimes miss things ^^;;

*drools at the sight of LibriVox* Thanks so much for the link! :D

Outlining, huh? I almost never outline, unless it's a school requirement. *is shot*

Hehe, I tend to miss a lot of things, too! Don't get to check my f-page often enough. *is a hypocrite*

It's all public domain stuff under US law, so it's totally free. All read by volunteers. I highly recommend the Arsene Lupin books by Maurice Leblanc :D I've also enjoyed Phantom of the Opera and many Sherlock Holmes stories :D

Sometimes I gloss over memes--especially when I see the same ones popping up left and right, all over the place ^^;; *snuggles you*

Hmm, I wonder if that kind of stuff is legal here in the Philippines . . . but I guess it doesn't really matter since piracy is a fact of life for most people. *is shot*

Aww, thank you! :3 But it's not just about the memes--I sometimes feel like a complete idiot when I don't know what's going on in my friends' lives. . . . *fails*

I'm...very young, let's say. I've had a few people tell me that I'll probably be an amazing teacher once I have some experience under my belt. Always learning, though ^__^

I have some students who also asked if they could have choir every day instead of every other day, AND some who are going to miss on Friday were sad because they won't get to see that part of it :)

I love them too. I think I'll continue teaching middle-schoolers~ :D Whee. They'll say the darnedest things and tend to be more honest about stuff than highschoolers and easier to teach more complicated stuff than elementary schoolers.

I'm sort of surprised at how much I love middle school kids, and I think that might be my age group. It's not easy to find a straight middle school choral position, though...but still, I do like 'em. Even when we have bad days :3

Oh, for the love all mankind, tell me you've read Phantom of the Opera in 15 minutes.

It's make-my-day worthy, I think.

I love [livejournal.com profile] m15m!! Phantom was the first of those I ever read, and I've entertained many a college friend by reading it aloud with my own personal voices and inflections *laugh*

I still crack up every time I read the "TO HER FATHER'S GRAVE!" part XDD
