Okay, so I'm having one of my little bouts of "I SUCK AT LIFE, WOES!" which you all know and love and probably want to slap me around for. But I was told that I am a little bit intimidating (not in so many words, but "scared to talk to me" comes pretty close, y/y?). This isn't the first time this has been said to me.

...am I really intimidating? I do not understand this. I mean, I'm only a horrid bitch ninety-nine percent of the time, amirite? *SHOT* And then half of you insist that I am OMGTEHKAWAIIIIII! (Bex, I'm looking at you XD), and then other people are telling me that they're afraid to talk to me.

...WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? *whines and beats on everyone with tiny fists to try and get answers*

The thing is with internet-dom is that when you become a bigger name and people start to recognise you, people get - for some reason - more scared to talk to you ;0; It doesn't mean anything about your personality!

Because you are lovely and adorable and ilu hard ♥.

I don't know the context, but I think [livejournal.com profile] maskalade is on the right track in saying- the bigger name you are in a fandom, the more intimidated it makes people of you.

Think of it like this: If you were told you could LJ-friend a famous author you highly admired, wouldn't you feel intimidated by it? Like afraid you'll say something stupid around them and then they'll look down on you? Same situation, smaller scale with fandom writers.

It by no means makes you a less-approachable person or means you're "scary," but just speaks of how much this person probably looks up to you and your fandom works. I've had the same happen to me years ago in fandom and I was equally baffled at the time. And I definitely think you're more outgoing and approachable than I was back then. XD

Yeah, as I said, I've been there and my first thought at the time was "But...*insert over 20 names here* is better known than I am!"

And let's face it, you are definitely out there writing like crazy in lots of fandoms that don't get a lot of action. So whenever someone's like "Man, I need some fic for _____" - you'd be one of the names to come up.

But hey, I'm intimidated of friending people for no reason except I'm rather shy about asking them. I always just wait around and hope they'll ask me first.

Hey, maybe you just need to put a "I don't bite unless asked to" note in your profile :P

Candy-chan is not hard to talk to! I mean, I've only talked to you like once or twice, but it was fun. And you're very nice and, uh, jolly, I believe the word is. Although I did lurk here for a long time before friending you--I guess it is the whole 'becoming known in a fandom' thing...and the fact that you're not just some random high-school fic crazed person.

But you're still fun to talk to. ^^; -glomps-

....everybody's already said what I was thinking. They speak trufs, listen to them. I don't know you very much at all in any way, but from what I can tell, you're a really nice person. And the only reason I would ever be wary of talking to you is because I admire your writing and ideas, and would be horrified if I made a fool of myself in front of you. xD

I second pretty much everyone's comments here - the more popular you are, the more people are scared they're going to look stupid talking to you because they have this image of you being all great and mighty and super smart in their heads for some reason.

And of course you are all of those things, too, so... XD

But, when I first started up a conversation with you, I thought you were extremely approachable and fun and easy to talk to, so.. *shrugs* I really don't know. I guess it's different in the RL - we all tend to put on masks in RL. On the net, we can be ourselves freely. I am often told I look intimidating and gloomy but that's just because I tend to be antisocial in some situations and I put on that kind of front.

Trust me, you're one of the nicest people I know here. *snuggles*

To add to the comments, I agree with everything that's been said. And your fic even hints at the same thing. You've become an icon, and at first it's a little intimidating to even think of speaking to you familiarly.

Think of how you'd react if you suddenly found yourself meeting and talking with J. K. Rowling, at first at least, you'd probably be frightened of it.

To put it in a personal note, when I first read your stories, over on FFN, I immediately liked what I was reading, but I wouldn't have wanted to start talking with you just 'cause I felt intimidated.

Eventually, after reading more of your fics and loving to read your writings, I decided it was time to see how approachable you were, so I followed your link to here and started to read your journal entries.

Now that I've caught up on reading them, I feel a lot less intimidated by the thought of actually talking to you over IM.

In short, it's not that you as a person seem intimidating, I don't think, but just that you're well known around your community of followers for a new person to seem intimidated by the thought of speaking to you at first.

In real life?I dunno...
Through internet/in fandom? In my opinion, no. You're kind, you're not agressive and, for what I've seen, you could accept that people have different opinions that you, instead of trying to convert the heretics, so, no, you're not intimidating for me.

In fact, I...Ok, I wouldn't said that I feel relieved or peaceful in your lJ, it's just that, no matters the subject, I don't think that I would see something worth of being mentionned in fandom wank, and trust me, it's something worth to be enjoyed.^__^

But, let's be brutally honest...
Like I've said, several times, when the subject was mentionned, I don't like much your stories, which are not my cup of tea.
And I've never shared much the opinions and the tastes of the average DC fan, so I've never cared about the BNF of the fandom.
If I've adored your stories, I suppose that it would have intimited me a bit, at least in the begining(it happened to me when I've talked with some of my favorite fics authors for the first time), but since it's not the case, I've "just" seen you as a potential LJ friend, nothing less and nothing more, so...

But well, you've never been arrogant and/or infatued with yourself, so, if people are intimited by you, I don't think that the problem is with you...it's...in the circumstances.
After all, no matters how kind and open your favorite author could be, it's still your favorite author, at first, you tend to see him/her through his/her works/fame, it took times to see him/her as an human being/friend.

No, I was never scared to talk with you, I was a bit bemused when you've added me in your friendlist(because, we're more or less the fire and the water if we looks at our respective opinions in DC fandom...XD;), yes, but scared? No.

Hmmm... I never found you intimidating. I guess I would say that I didn't want to bother you; you seemed like as busy person. Plus, it'd seem kind of weird if some random person you didn't know just started talking to you. Lurking was just easier.

Also, I agree with a lot of what has been said. Candy, you're one of the most popular Detective Conan fanfiction authors there are. Well, actually, you're one of the most popular ff authors out there. Period. I guess that reputation could be a bit intimidating. ^^;;

"To be great is to be misunderstood." ~ George Elliot So, maybe people who don't read your personal LJ think that you're a hard to approach person? I don't know.

However, I'm really glad I de-lurked. Yayness. :D You seem like a very cool, cute, and down-to-earth person. xP

I agree with a lot of the bigger name comments here. Face it Candy, you're a big name fan for the Conan fandom and for your writings. ♥ <3 Take it as a good thing!

People can be a little scared of approaching people who have the big name stats.

You're a sweetheart though. So glad that I de-lurked a few years back.

Hmmm... that made me think. Do people find ME intimidating? I hope not. I don't think they do either.

In any case, based on experience, I also find a lot of people "intimidating". Some people LOOK intimidating, some people SOUND intimidating, some people are intimidating because of their "reputation" or "name", but that doesn't mean that those people try to be intimidating. Even when you get to know a person more and even get to talk to them, there are times that person is still intimidating to you without them trying to be.

So, what am I trying to say? Don't worry about it. Just treat people the same as you always do, and maybe get to know them more too. "Intimidating" is dependent on the person who is describing that person, not the person being described. So, don't let it get to you. :)

For what it's worth, I don't find you intimidating. :) You're a cheery and lovely friend. :)

Much love! <3
