In which Candy gets craftsy~
May. 9th, 2010 07:29 pmMy list of things to watch keeps getting longer. Coincidentally, so does my Netflix queue ^^;;
I mentioned quilting in my last entry, so here's the story behind that: my aunt and uncle will be celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary in...October, I believe. So my mom and I have been working on a making them a home-made, queen-sized quilt as an anniversary gift. We went and picked out...I think it was something like thirty-six different fabrics and cut out and pieced together over ninety squares, plus triangles for the edges, so it's got a really scrappy look to it. Also, it's huge.
Just cutting out the pieces took probably...twenty hours between the two of us. And then Mom did the sewing on the nine-blocks, which took AGES. I laid it out on the floor in the downstairs family room, and the sucker took up the entire floor. At the moment it's all sewn into strips, half of which I still need to iron. That's our division of labor at this stage - Mom is way better with a sewing machine, so she's handling that. But apparently I do a better job of pressing the pieces than she generally does, so I get to handle the steam. (To be fair, I'm taking extra care - it's a big gift for an important occasion, and I want it to look nice!)
Ultimately, three of our four family members are going to be involved in this because when it comes time to put 'em all together, we've already told Dad that he's going to be shanghaied into service - this sucker is going to be so heavy that we'll need him to help hold the fabric and feed it through the sewing machine, and probably also to help me hold it when I'm ironing the big seams.
So yes, there will be picture when the quilt top is all put together ^____^
I'm also going to be piecing together my own first quilt top! \o/ My mom and my aunt and I are doing this "quilt square o' the month" thing together. It actually started yesterday, but everyone's schedule was a little bit crazy, so we're going to pick 'em up on the alternate day, which is this coming Thursday. The finished project should theoretically look something like this. Expect pictures on this as well XD
One of my pharmacists got married yesterday. I had to work, so I didn't get to go to the actually ceremony, but I did go to the reception. It was a good time. Drank, ate, cheered, laughed. I didn't stay too late, though. On top of already being kinda tired and having a few things to do, I don't drink much, so my face was getting warm after two Smirnoffs. Hmm, strawberry acai... ^________^
Inspired by a couple of my favorite authors in various fandoms, I joined up on An Archive of Our Own. Nothing posted yet, though ^^;; My next days off are Tuesday and Saturday, and I am hoping to spend some time on at least one of those days getting some fannish housekeeping stuff done. Yay for not having a life! \o/
...I s'pose I should get m'self together. We're going out for breakfast in half an hour in honor of Mommy's Day, before I go to work. So if there are any mothers on my f-list, have a happy Mother's Day, because you are awesome...and I'm increasingly convinced that I couldn't do your job!
