Jun. 29th, 2006 10:38 pmRambling ahead! This entry is sort of a thought-dump, mostly about music stuff. You have been warned =3
I went to a concert with my sister tonight--well, it was more like a musical revue kind of thing. They did songs from a few different musicals. The only one I didn't know was The Last Five Years. But after the "Always a Bridesmaid" number, I think Little Sister has figured out that I meant it when I said I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change was a great soundtrack ^^ It was an enjoyable performance, though. I had a pretty good time, and it was all good music.
I get home, and find I have a message to call one of the guys from the Iowa Choral Directors Association, or ICDA. Turns out I scored a scholarship for the convention again this year!
What does that mean, exactly? This organization has an annual convention here in Iowa (of course), and usually about twenty students are given scholarships to attend the conference free of charge. In exchange for our free ride, though, we have to work at the sessions. It's really easy, though--we hand out papers or packets if the presentors have them, or we work the stereo if necessary. It's really easy work, and we get into all of the sessions, get to participate and meet all sorts of people, and learn a TON.
I went to this conference last year (with Vixie, actually) and had a blast. You get to meet a lot of very cool, very knowledgable people. The sessions are usually pretty cool--informative, interesting, and varied. Plus, we get free music from some of the sight-singing sessions (yay alliteration!). The orientation meeting for us kids is at two PM on Sunday, July twenty-third. And then, just like last year, I go right from that into the show choir camp--which brings me to the next interesting thing going on in my little musical world.
PK got in touch with me and asked if I would be interested in doing some choreography for the camp this year. My response was something along the lines of, "HELL YES!! ...can you help me pick a song?" *laugh* The last couple years, I've been on strict counselor duty, which translates roughly to checking kids in, sitting around until I'm needed, shepherding kids around, doing room-checks at night, and just generally keeping an eye on things. It's actually a good time, though. The kids who come to the show choir camp are good kids. They're usually there because they want to be there, and they're willing to work hard in rehearsal ^^
Plus, at that camp we do Skit Night. Each counselor takes a group, and we put together a little number based on a theme. Last year, we did Musical Mimes, and the other groups had to guess what musical we were acting out. It was kind of hard to do, but I think we were quite clear in our wordless rendition of Guys and Dolls. We could use signs in our show (within reason, of course), so we printed off a big "and" sign (&) and then we had all the guys on one side of me and all the girls on the other, and we pointed at it--Guys and Dolls. It was hard to figure out, but in the end, it was hilarious. Everyone had a good time.
Actually, poor Bobby (another counselor) was frantically googling on his laptop because he didn't know the musical he'd drawn. Eventually, all the counselors decided that we were going to share what musicals we had so we could give each other some ideas, and then we didn't participate in the guessing contest. It all turned out really well--all of them were guessed, so we must have done something right!
I truthfully have no idea what song I'm doing for this thing. I need to pick two songs. I asked John if he'd help me with it...I don't know how much help I'm going to get, but once I get the song decided on, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with some dance moves. I might ask Little Sister for some ideas--she's a show choir kid, too.
The weekend after the show choir camp is the All-State camp. Of the two camps, that one's less involved for the counselors during the day...but some of the kids are only there because it's required of them, not because they want to be. So it can get a little hairy, but generally we don't have too many problems...except for the one girl who swore up and down she didn't know that it was time for room checks, even though we'd been walking up and down the hall for the last half hour, counting down to it *rolls eyes*
I look forward to the camps, though...but by the end of them, I'm generally ready to head home and get some sleep, AND get the songs out of my head. Last year, I was singing "Car Wash" and "I Love a Piano" for two bleepin' weeks. But it's all good ^_^
Otherwise...yeah. I got my muses back. The plunnies are going CRAZY on my challenges, especially Hugs and Nights. A few of them are out in left field, but I think I can make them work. Part of me wants to try and finish these challenges by the end of the summer, but that's seventy-five stories in two months. Probably not a happening thing, so I'm thinking maybe try for my birthday. That's four months away (and then I'll be twenty-one yaaaaay!!), which is a bit more do-able.
And there should be a new fic-swap up on
manycases1truth tomorrow, I think. *giggles* Whoever gets my fic prompt is probably going to hunt me down and kill me. I asked some friends for random items, and tossed my three favorites into the poll box. Thank you Cassie and Rachie! Looking forward to seeing what I get, though ^_^
Okay, enough of my assaulting your f-lists. Ciao for now!
