A complete stranger said this to me.

Because asking someone to explain and justify their own statements obviously makes you a hooligan.

And yes, obviously we're all spoiled and not spanked enough. I'll have to go back in time and inform dear mum to swing the belt harder, obviously she didn't make a big enough imprint.

And I am suddenly, viciously reminded of what would happen should my mom have found my lj while she was still alive. I got in enough trouble growing up as it was for reading and writing the gay pornz. (The little family "discussion" - which pretty much is summed up by "This is a sin, so stop it or you're going to hell", love you too Mom - was like, epic lulz.)

And I apologize, but if I ever meet that woman in real life, someone please remind me to be civil, lest I forget myself and shove a Bible down her throat so she can feel the sensation I get every time I read one of her comments! Mmn, holy writ, it's magically delicious and tastes like newsprint and hypocrisy.

It was like watching a trainwreck of my attempts at reasoning with my own mother, only with...a more laid-back attitude and less of the yelling. A lot less of the yelling. (I got my own fire-and-brimstone Bible-beating preacher at home! I was such a balanced child growing up.)

I am filled with the unholy urge to simply bite the woman and be done with it. preferably in the neck, so I can at leats take out the vocal cords.

My parents didn't spank me very often. Meanwhile, a friend of mine was a victim of abuse. Another was raped as a child. And yet we all turned out remarkably similar and fairly well-adjusted. Fancy that, eh?

I held myself back SO MUCH DX In fact this was going to be the response to her FIRST comment:

"Ya, ok, I need to say something to this, I'm sorry. First) Parents get respect when they deserve respect. I'm not saying you don't! I know Jeva loves both of you very much, she's said so herself many times. However, there are situations in which your child will be right, and just because you don't agree? Doesn't mean she's disrespecting you or that you have the right to 'correct' her. There's nothing 'wrong' with her for having a differing opinion. I didn't see that she did/said anything wrong besides saying she was purely free will and recounting things in her past. We all do so, for most of us, writing is a way to stay SANE due to life and what it's brought with it. Also, some parent's really DON'T deserve respect because they do not know how to take care of a child. There are parents who beat their child, parents who emotionally abuse their child, parents who don't care for or respect their child and give reason to EARN that respect FROM their child. Just sayin'.

Second) Our country is not Christian law. It never was, and I hope it never is. If I remember correctly? Most of the founding fathers were deists. They did NOT want the church and state to be one. Quite the opposite, they wanted them to be SEPERATE. They didn't want the church ruling our lives, they wanted this country to be free for ALL. No matter what religion one had, they would be welcomed because it would not be ruled by just ONE.

Third) Just because one is Christian does not give one the right to out right criticize someone for not doing any harm to anyone. If a man wants to love and sleep with a man HE MAY DO SO, because they are human. Because they can love, laugh, cry, etc. like anyone else can. Because they want to be HAPPY and treated equally. All Men Are Created Equal, no matter what they believe or do not believe, no matter whom they love or have sex with, no matter what their skin color may be. We all have the same organs, the same senses, the same necessities in life. Criticizing, reprimending, or repressing because of that? I don't think that's right at all :|"

But I decided Jeva didn't need more added to it so, ya ;;b I LOVE YOU SO MUCH THOUGH for saying everything I wanted to say to her. I am so grateful that my mom is open-minded and doesn't care that I'm an atheist. I admire Jeva so much for having to put up with those things and... ya *deep breath* *exhales* I-I'm good now ;;b

See and there's where the misinterpretation comes into play. I'm guessing Jeva's mom came from the generation where you just OBEY your parents for no other reason than to just OBEY them because that's what their interpretation of the bible is etc etc. and so finds it offensive when they are not OBEYED. .. I say it's the changing times for the best.

I actually held myself back yesterday because I was asked to, and because I have a great deal of respect for Jeva. And I am going to apologize to her when she gets back online. I didn't want to cause her trouble, but I could NOT sit there and watch that woman say those things without opposition.

And I love your points--particularly your third one. It's something that baffles me about a lot of hard-core Christians. The Bible does not say "Love thy white neighbor" or "Love thy straight neighbor." It says "Love thy neighbor."

My parents didn't spank me very often. They disciplined in other ways, and look at me--I've graduated from college with a 3.69 GPA, I'm squeaky-clean, and I'm a teacher, a very respectable profession. I'm not perfect, but I think I turned out pretty well.

Umm.. well. I can see her point only because I understand how 'open-minded' conservatives think. Even questioning them and not taking the stories as answers can be taking as insulting and belittling the knowledge they share. While we may find it offensive that they can't answer straight, they find it offensive and baffling that you don't take their answer into consideration. It's all a rather baffling affair.

One of my dear friends here on LJ dreams of being a nun. She is a die-hard Catholic. She and I discuss religion frequently and with great enthusiasm. I have absolutely no problem with conservative religion, and actually have great respect for people who have such beliefs. It's when they start thumping the Bible at me and expecting me to accept it without question that I get annoyed.

And regardless of how offended she was, it doesn't excuse her calling a complete stranger names like that. Especially when I was going out of my way to be as polite as possible (no matter how mad I was) in asking her to explain her statements because I felt they were contradicting themselves. There is NO excuse for that, especially from a grown woman who should know better. And she accused me of being rude.

Holy cow! Quite the responses you're getting. But on a side note I think every older generation thinks those things about the younger, up and coming generation. We have had certain things easier due to advances in technology and society. Sometimes I think the older generation tries to make us youngins the ones to blame, when in all actuality they are just as much to blame as we are. That is if there truly is any blame to cast. Personally, I think it just is what it is.

What happened in this situation was that this woman was making a lot of statements involving the Bible, and some of them were rather contradictory to each other and to the point she was trying to make. I asked her to explain herself and clarify her points, or told her how her statements (as they were worded) made entirely different points. I was reasonable, if a bit aggressive on the wording--I was really mad.

...and she responded by making a statement calling me all of the above names. And then she related a story about an elephant, which I did not read because I was too full of lulz at the fact that a complete stranger accuses me of having no manners while calling me all these names.

So...while you have a valid point, it was more a Bible-thumper getting annoyed that I questioned her ^^;; So of course I posted it here for even MORE lulz...and also to let a few other people let it out. This all took place on someone else's LJ.

*nod* That's a good quote. I think the basic teachings of the Bible are quite good and should be applicable to everyone. If they were, we could all live in a much better world. However, I do not see a lot of people actually preaching those teachings. Hence, my disillusionment with organized religion. It seems hypocritical to me.

Lord, does the persecution ever stop? Because we've been persecuted, tortured and martyred- it doesn't give anyone the right to shove the Torah, Koran or Bible down someone else's throat. Why can't we just LOVE each other? why don't people stop and ask what Jesus told us to do before He went to heaven? aren't those the very rules that we, as Christians, pride ourselves on?

I mean... really. Have we no shame? No mercy on the memory a fellow brother who- just because he's not canonized- died and now you're picketing his FUNERAL? For God's sake- have some SHAME! There is no reward, no glory in the violence of disrupting a ceremony of death for a man who simply did his job.

When I saw her statement, you were one of the people I thought of. You and I turned out a lot alike. Knowing what you went through was one reason that statement did infuriate me for a moment.

Oh, I was asking her clarify some statements she made that involved religious quotes and invocations. The statements seemed contradictory to me. Suddenly she just threw that at me, along with some story about elephants (which I ignored). I told her that she had just managed to destroy any shred of credibility she had left by lashing out at a perfect stranger--and I was going out of my way to be as polite as I could--and calling me names that she had no basis for. It was kind of fun ^___^

...that sort of thing belongs in a woman's own private kingdom, Cass. So...HAVE FUN! :D *shot*

Some people really just misinterpret the Bible and keep a closed mind. We must be accepting, too, right?--not only to straights, but also to the others. We ought to love everybody, regardless of gender. It's these outrageous things that fill me with doubt for Christianity. I'm still hoping I could come back to the faith, though....:[
